The Cedar Box Archives
Every family has a story.
Ours started with a dusty garage and a cedar box no one had opened in decades.

The First Time We Opened the Cedar Box
The old smoker got all the attention.
For nearly a week, Louis and Jon cleaned rust from the firebox, tightened loose bolts, and wondered how many meals the old pit had cooked over the years.
The cedar box sat quietly in the corner of the shop.
Neither of them was in much of a hurry to open it.
After all, they had gone to the auction looking for a smoker—not an old wooden box.
But curiosity has a way of winning.
One evening, after the tools had been put away and the porch had gone quiet, they carried the cedar box outside, brushed away years of dust, and slowly lifted the lid.
Inside were handwritten recipes stained with smoke.
Faded photographs with names written on the back.
Letters tied together with worn twine.
Newspaper clippings from another time.
And scattered throughout it all were stories about two men...
Merle Cracker and Earl Cracker.
Some pages made them sound like legendary pitmasters.
Others painted them as storytellers who could turn an ordinary cookout into a tale that would be repeated for years.
The more Louis and Jon read, the harder it became to tell where history ended and folklore began.
And maybe that was the point.
They closed the box that evening with more questions than answers.
But they made one promise before they went inside.
They'd keep opening it.
One story at a time.
One recipe at a time.
One piece of questionable history at a time.
Some families inherit silver.
Louis and Jon inherited a mystery.
And they decided to share it.
